From HM Naval Base Clyde:
Six teams took part in the Northern Region Rugby 7s tournament at Helensburgh Rugby Club on Wednesday, 3 May.
Teams were entered from Helensburgh RFC, HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Ambush, HMS Vengeance, HMNB Clyde and the Submarine Qualifying Course and they all played each other in a league format with 16 games in total being played through out the day.
The highlight of the afternoon was the final between Helensburgh RFC and HMNB Clyde which was a closely fought battle with the naval base team winning in the dying moments of the match, 19-12.
Captain of HMS Neptune, Captain Craig Mearns was VIP for the day and was delighted to present the prizes to the winning team.
As well as some great rugby, spectators and players alike enjoyed a great day in the glorious May sunshine, with a few cold beers from the Rugby Club bar and a burger or two from the barbeque for anyone hungry.
The organiser of the event, Petty Officer Physical Training Wayne Dawson said: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to all who took part and those who helped to organise the event. There was a lot of talent on show today but the outstanding man of the tournament was Marine “Mat” Chase.”
The winning team will now go on to play in the Royal Navy final which wil take place at HMS Heron on Wednesday, 7 June.
